Ubuntu lovers would know that with each new Ubuntu iteration is a codenamed accompanied with its release. This year, the codename for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is Xenial Xerus. Xenial means friendly while Xerus stands for a ground squirrel.

Designers far and wide jumped on the bandwagon of the wallpaper design project after Canonical announced Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus. The zeal to make their own mascot animal design was real. The anticipated release of Ubuntu 16.04 is a few days away now and Canonical has unveiled the animal logo that the upcoming release will have.

This logo was spotted in an update to the Ubiquity package that appears on the installer screen of Ubuntu and as was done with previous Ubuntu releases and their logos, Ubuntu will promote the new release with the Xerus logo.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus will be released on the 21st of April 21 and we think it will be the best Ubuntu release in ages, not just because it will be using the Linux 4.4 LTS kernel, but because of other features like the ability to update the firmware right from the Gnome package manager, to rotate the Unity interface and the discontinuation of Ubuntu Spyware, among others.

What do you think about the official mascot of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus, yay or nay? Were there other wallpaper submissions you would have preferred? Let us know in the comments section below and don’t forget to stick to Ubuntu Next for more updates.
