Simplenote Finally Has an Official App for Linux
Simplenote is arguably the most popular note-taking app on Apple’s iOS platform and it is now available for Linux.
The note-taking application was developed by WordPress makers — Automattic and has now come to Windows 10 and Linux by the beautiful combination of Facebook’s React and Electron languages. A lot of awesome Linux apps use Electron so this comes as no surprise to us.
“Why is Simplenote so popular?” You may ask. iOS is the first platform to receive the app before it expanded to Android and Mac OS X.
However, the case of Simplenote is not the first time Linux is supporting the app’s service backend as there have been a thousand and one ways to sync, manage and edit notes on one’s Simplenote app using third-party applications like the famous NvPY and even command-line tools like sncli, just like in the case of Evernote.
What makes the service this particular app provides so appealing is its consistent UX across all platforms as its core features are available in its hosted web app the same way they are available in the iOS app.
Your notes, tags, and to-dos are kept in sync irrespective of what was used to create them without any exceptions.
- History — slide back to view and restore previous versions of your note
- Collaborate— share your note with others and allow them to edit it
- Publish — Make your note public with its own URL
- Tag — organize your notes effectively with tags.
- Pin — pin notes right from the note list so they’re easy to find
The Collaborate feature is especially an excellent feature because unlike Google Doc’s approach, the note receiver can edit it without creating a Simplenote account. What happens is the shared notes get posted on the Simplenote website using a private URL and all collaborators can have view and edit permissions. The changes are automatically synced and saved to the desktop app.
The Linux and Windows app versions of Simplenote also have:
- Choice of list views (cosy, condensed, expanded)
- Markdown support (has to be enabled)
- Offline support
- Optional dark mode
- Sorting options (last modified, alphabetical, etc)
