Top 10 Themes for Ubuntu 16.04

We’re sure you Ubuntu folks aren’t new to customising your systems, after all, that’s how we got to start using Ubuntu right?

Themes are the easiest way to change the look (and feel) of your Ubuntu desktop if chances are that you are bored with your desktop UI/UX and so we have compiled a list of top 10 themes for the first quarter of this year.

At the time of writing we have Ubuntu unity desktop installed but with this guide you will do just fine, and the themes should also be available for Kubuntu and Ubuntu GNOME as well.

Changing Icons in Ubuntu 16.04

Before we get to our list of best icon themes for Ubuntu 16.04, let’s first see how to change the icons.

There are two ways you can install icon themes in Ubuntu:

  • You can either download and extract the themes manually to ~/.icons (you will have to create this directory if you don’t already have it)
  • You can install the themes via a PPA (by running easy commands, -this way is easier for most people)

In this guide we will just stick to using the terminal because it’s more straight forward.

Either way, you will need to us an application called Unity Tweak Tool to change the icon themes once the themes are installed.

To Install Unity Tweak Tool type the command below into your terminal:

sudo apt install unity-tweak-tool

Then run the tool and click on Icons:

You would see the icon themes that were already available on your system here alongside the newly installed ones.

2. Numix

The runner-up in our list of best icon themes for Ubuntu is Numix. You can guess the popularity of Numix theme suite from the fact that it is the default theme in several Linux distributions including Antergos and Korora Linux.
