You Can Now Download Ubuntu 16.10 Alpha 2

Ubuntu 16.10 Release

Ubuntu 16.10 is fast approaching and its second alpha release of the development cycle is now available for download.

This time around there are three official flavors taking part and they are: the lightweight Lubuntu, the consistently marvelous Ubuntu MATE, and China’s Ubuntu Kylin.

If you are a fan of Xubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME and/or Kubuntu don’t fret – your favorite distros will take part in future milestones.

With regards to changelog, only Ubuntu Mate out of the three Ubuntu flavors taking part one worthy of mentioning.

Some of the changes Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Alpha 2 introduces are:

  • Firefox has a customized Ubuntu MATE Start Page
  • MATE Heads-Up Display (HUD) (via MATE Tweak)
  • MATE Dock Applet supports drag and drop reordering
  • Messaging Menu indicator
  • Smaller .iso image
  • Webcam app ‘Cheese’ added to default apps

We usually recommend that only developers, bug hunters, or people in general who are tech savvy enough to fix a broken system to be the ones to download alpha releases since they wouldn’t be using it for their everyday use.

But anyway, if you just can’t fight the feeling then you can always test them from a live USB or from inside a virtual machine for safety purposes.

At the moment, Ubuntu 16.04 Alpha 2 boats a host of popular apps including the latest stable release of LibreOffice, Mozilla Firefox 46, libraries, numerous updated components and other system machinery.

Thies milestone ships with Linux Kernel 4.4.x ships and Ubuntu 16.10 will ship housing a Linux Kernel 4.8 by the time of its stable version in released in October.
