See How to Install the Arc GTK Theme on Your Ubuntu 16.04
About a day ago we published an article about how Ubuntu 16.10 users can easily install and use the Arc GTK theme and we promised a guide for 16.04 users was on its way. Well, here it is.
The new version of the wildly popular theme is available to download and titled v20160506; it introduces a small set of changes:
- Improves GTK2 styling
- Fixes Unity window decorations
- No longer hides ‘switch trough’ in GNOME menu highlight
- Various misc bug fixes
The Unity window fix patches a bug that rendered a small, but noticeable visual quirk when using the Arc GTK theme on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
Other Recent Changes Include
The latest version of the super popular theme builds on the recent updates which introduced a highlight color for selected menu items, a dark Chrome browser theme, a new background color for the Unity panel and a theme for the Unity Greeter, etc.
Other recent updates to the theme include improved support for Cinnamon 3.0, GNOME 3.20, and the latest version of the MATE desktop along with its associated app suite.
If you don’t already have the Arc GTK theme repo added to Ubuntu Software Sources none of these recent updates, fixes, and tweaks will be available to you.
But not to worry. Let’s show you how to fix that.
Installing the Latest Arc GTK Theme on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Getting the latest version of the Arc GTK theme on Ubuntu 16.04 is simple because there are a number of choices available and you can even add the theme designer’s repository so you can receive new versions of Arc on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS when they are released.
Run the following command to add the Arc GTK repo:
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Horst3180/xUbuntu_16.04/ /' >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/arc-theme.list"
Next, refresh your software sources and install the theme:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install arc-theme
You’ll also need to import the repo’s key to quite any command-line errors:
sudo apt-key add - < Release.key
The theme’s source packages are available on its Github page.
Bonus tip: Navigate to the “extra/Chrome” folder and drag n’ drop the arc-theme.crx (or arc-dark-theme.crx) file to your Chrome/Chromium window to install the Arc Chrome themes.
