Download The New Linux Mint 18 ‘Sarah’ KDE Edition Beta Release Now

The Linux Mint team announced that Linux Mint 18 ‘Sarah’ KDE Edition beta is available for download earlier today and this KDE release is a long term release that will be supported until 2021 just like the Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce releases.

Mint 18 KDE Edition features Plasma 5.6 and SDDM

Linux Mint 18 is based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS package and the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel. It features the KDE Plasma 5.6 desktop environment and the KDE apps 15.12.3 software suite.

The Sarah KDE Edition ships with LibreOffice as the default office suite, Mozilla Firefox as default web browser and a wide range of popular KDE apps including Okular, Kontact, KMail, digiKam, Dolphin, Gwenview, Skanlite, Konversation, KTorrent, Amarok, Ark, Kate, K3b, Konsole, and Dragon Player.

Changes and Other System Improvements

With regards to the changes that have been made to the update manager of which many of them are under the hood changes, the visual ones include the use of subtle animations, stack widgets, and better alternative theme support.

Apt now supports the Debian syntax and apt install & apt remove now possess progress bars. The OS supports exFAT file systems out of the box and Btrfs support is installed by default.

Another update is the improvement in HiDPI support for Linux Mint 18’s KDE Edition and now, most of the Mint apps have been moved to GTK3.
